Dubai: Renowned Iraqi director Aws Al-Sharqi, celebrated for his work in Gulf and Arab dramas, is set to bring his unique blend of dark comedy and social commentary to the forefront once again. Al-Sharqi is preparing to film part of the series “WiFi” in Dubai, with plans moving forward as scriptwriting and necessary procedures are finalized.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sharqi, who has directed over 19 projects, is known for his bold approach to storytelling. His notable works include series such as “Sikka Safar,” “Hyperloop,” “Awad Aban An Jad,” and “Hind Stani.” Notably, the comedy program “WiFi 2,” which he directed, achieved high viewership in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region. He continued this success by directing the third and fourth seasons, featuring stars from across the Gulf and Arab world, gaining widespread popularity.

Al-Sharqi’s collaboration with actor Nasser Al-Qasabi has been particularly impactful, with series like “Selfie,” which became a beloved comedy in the Gulf, using satire to address social issues. The series included prominent comedians from the region, enhancing its appeal.

In 2020, Al-Sharqi and Al-Qasabi teamed up again for the comedy “Exit 7,” which featured a strong cast and explored themes relevant during the COVID-19 era. Their partnership continued in 2021 with the series “Curfew,” which maintained a comedic lens while delving into significant issues of the time.

Al-Sharqi also made his mark with the Ramadan riddle show “One Thousand and One Nights” in 2011, which was the first of its kind in Iraq and achieved top viewership ratings. The show’s success was attributed to its innovative format and engaging content.

The decision to produce new seasons of his shows, Al-Sharqi noted, relies heavily on viewership ratings. He stated that the potential for additional seasons is contingent on the show’s artistic structure and audience reception. Several episodes have even reached up to 10 million views on YouTube, demonstrating the program’s wide-reaching appeal.
