Lyon: Fenerbahce secured their place in the Champions League group stage after a hard-fought 2-1 away win against Olympique Lyonnais at the Groupama Stadium last night in the second leg of their playoff tie. The Turkish side overturned a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Istanbul last week, clinching their qualification with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, both teams started strongly, with Lyon applying early pressure in search of an early goal. Fenerbahce’s Brazilian goalkeeper, Ederson, made a crucial save in the eighth minute, denying a powerful left-footed shot from outside the penalty area by Belgian striker Malick Fofana.
Fenerbahce nearly opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Oguz Aydin passed the ball to English midfielder Archie Brown, who had made a run from deep into the left side of the penalty area. Brown unleashed a powerful left-footed shot, but it was saved by Slovakian goalkeeper Dominik Gref.
Kosovar striker Vedat Muriqi opened the scoring for the Turkish side in the 23rd minute, rising to meet a cross from Oguz Aydin and heading it towards goal. The goalkeeper made the initial save, but the rebound fell kindly for Muriqi to tap in.
Fenerbahce doubled their lead five minutes later through Archie Brown, who headed home a corner from his fellow Englishman Mason Greenwood from close range, giving the Turkish side a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Lyon intensified their attacking pressure in search of a comeback, and Malick Fofana pulled a goal back in the 61st minute with a first-time left-footed shot from inside the penalty area, capitalizing on a cross from Englishman Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
VAR intervened to disallow two Lyon goals in quick succession in the 64th and 71st minutes. The first, scored by Belgian Louis Openda, was ruled offside, and the second, by substitute Algerian Ka«l Boudache, was ruled out for a foul.
