Basra: The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Basra has urged the local government and non-ministerial entities to adopt the Cabinet’s recommendations on accepting criticism and constructive monitoring. The office highlighted that, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq, citizens play a crucial role in the state system and are not adversaries. State institutions, it emphasized, exist to serve the people.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the office’s statement called on members of the Council of Representatives, the Provincial Council, and the executive branch to prioritize issues impacting citizens’ lives. Key concerns include the region’s highly polluted and saline water, the environmental state of Basra, neglected health and education sectors, inadequate health and educational environments, and rising divorce and suicide rates. These issues, the statement noted, should be addressed within the framework of human development.

The office emphasized the importance of working collectively and taking responsibility for these pressing issues, in line with the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq. It warned against further delays or neglect, cautioning that action is necessary “before it is too late.”
