Baghdad: The Baghdad Environment Directorate, a branch of the Ministry of Environment, has launched an awareness campaign in the Al-Ghazl market to address the perils of illegal fishing and its detrimental effects on the ecological balance and biodiversity. The initiative also seeks to foster compliance with regulations and laws pertaining to hunting and wildlife conservation.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Sadiq Al-Moussawi, Director of the Baghdad Environment Directorate, mentioned that the campaign focused on educating citizens and vendors in the market, known for its trade in various animal species. The campaign highlighted the detrimental consequences of poaching and its impact on ecological balance and biodiversity. It also stressed the importance of adhering to existing legislation and regulations that oversee hunting and prevent illegal practices, citing Article (18/Third) of the Environmental Protection and Improvement Law No. (27) of 2009, along with other pertinent laws.

Al-Moussawi further stated that during the campaign, the team assessed the types of animals exchanged in the market and their origins. They also distributed educational materials aimed at enhancing environmental awareness and underscoring the significance of wildlife protection and biodiversity preservation.
