Honolulu: Scientists have observed a rare astronomical event, tracking a centaur transforming into a comet. This discovery fills a critical gap in understanding the evolution of small, icy bodies within our solar system.
According to Iraqi News Agency, astronomers observed the object known as 450P/LONEOS, originally identified by the Lowell Observatory survey in 2004, transitioning from an inert centaur into a comet. Centaurs are icy bodies that orbit the sun between Jupiter and Neptune, believed to originate from the Kuiper Belt beyond Pluto. These objects are characterized by unstable orbits due to gravitational interactions with the gas giant planets, which can push them closer to the sun or eject them from the solar system.
The transformation of centaurs into Jupiter-family comets, which have orbital periods of less than 20 years and are influenced by Jupiter’s gravity, has been hypothesized but never observed until now. Though 450P’s orbital period remains at 22 years, precluding it from being classified as a Jupiter-family comet, planetary scientist Charles Schambeau and his team from the University of Central Florida have documented its comet-like behavior. Using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, they observed the formation and brightening of a coma-a cloud of gas and dust-around 450P’s nucleus between 2019 and 2024 as it approached perihelion, the closest point to the sun in its orbit.
Further analysis with the James Webb Space Telescope revealed carbon dioxide gas and traces of crystalline ice and dust particles within the coma of 450P. Its last perihelion in August 2024 exposed it to significantly more solar heat than before, catalyzing its transformation and providing valuable insights into the dynamic processes governing our solar system’s icy bodies.
