Tripoli: The Iraqi Embassy in Libya has announced that 33 migrants from the Kurdistan Region are set to depart for Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region. This was confirmed by Ahmed Al-Sahaf, the Charg© d’Affaires of the Iraqi Embassy in Libya, who spoke to the Kurdish media network Rudaw.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sahaf stated that the migrants’ flight is scheduled to take off at 8:00 PM Tripoli time on Sunday and is expected to land at Erbil International Airport at 5:00 AM on Monday, September 7. The effort to coordinate the migrants’ return was a collaborative one, involving both the embassy and the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Regional Government, who also secured the migrants’ plane tickets to alleviate financial burdens on their families.

On September 2, 2026, the Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Region issued a statement following reports of missing citizens in Libya. In response, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani instructed immediate measures to locate, rescue, and repatriate these individuals. The Ministry of Interior disclosed that many of these young migrants had endured harsh conditions in Libyan prisons, with some spending up to eight months under the threat of death.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has reiterated its warning regarding illegal migration, emphasizing the severe risks and legal consequences involved. The Ministry’s statement highlighted that illegal migration jeopardizes lives and violates international laws. Additionally, the KRG announced that it had successfully rescued 302 illegal migrants in various circumstances and facilitated their return to the Kurdistan Region.
