SJC Instructs Legal Action Against Sectarian Incitement

Baghdad: The Supreme Judicial Council has issued directives to the relevant investigative courts and members of the Public Prosecution to actively monitor and address the use of sectarian language in media and social media that aims to incite sectarian strife.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the Media Office of the Supreme Judicial Council released a statement highlighting the council’s instructions. These directives focus on identifying individuals who employ sectarian terms and phrases to foster societal division for political or personal gain. Legal measures will be pursued against such individuals as per the law.

The statement further referenced a State Administration Coalition meeting that took place on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The meeting, attended by the four presidencies and political leaders, underscored the nation’s stance against sectarian rhetoric. It called for punitive measures against those promoting such rhetoric, which is deemed a violation of the constitution and the law.
