New York:UN Secretary-General António Guterres has criticized the United States’ decision to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), cautioning about the potential global consequences on justice efforts.
Accourding to National Iraqi News Agency, Guterres expressed significant concern over the potential fallout from these sanctions, describing the move as a major setback to global initiatives aimed at enhancing international criminal justice.
Guterres urged all countries to adhere to their international legal obligations and support efforts to ensure accountability for the most severe crimes concerning the global community.
The announcement of the sanctions came earlier on Friday from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio explained that the sanctions would prevent interactions with the Court, restrict its funding, and limit its capability to take action against the US.
