Baghdad:Head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, emphasized that concluding the military mission of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS is a crucial step in advancing Iraq’s national project. This project aims to establish a state capable of making independent political, security, and economic decisions.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani’s remarks were made during a speech on Sovereignty Day. He underscored that true sovereignty requires independence in decision-making across various domains. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Iraqis, emphasizing the need for competition in state-building and strengthening institutions.
Al-Sudani elaborated on the concept of national sovereignty as an integrated system that encompasses the state’s power to exercise its own will, make independent decisions, and protect its interests without external interference. He highlighted that the battle fought by Iraqis was not only about liberating territory but also defending the state’s political and social systems and the people’s right to security and stability.
He paid tribute to the sacrifices of the Iraqi Army, the Popular Mobilization Forces, and other security forces, as well as the support from religious authorities and political groups, which contributed significantly to the liberation efforts. Al-Sudani noted the progress toward ending the Global Coalition’s mission is rooted in the resilience of Iraqis and should not be seen merely as a result of political negotiations.
Al-Sudani stressed the importance of balanced international relations that respect Iraq’s sovereignty and decision-making independence. He pointed out that sovereignty is indivisible and that achieving it in one area does not guarantee its full realization in all fields. He called for unity among political and social forces to support a strong and stable Iraqi state.
He concluded by stating that protecting national sovereignty involves consolidating constitutional legitimacy, combating corruption, and ensuring that military and security decisions are under state control. This is vital for maintaining Iraq’s integrity and independence.
