Media Commission Emphasizes Responsible Economic Coverage

Accra:The Communications and Media Commission issued a circular urging the responsible coverage of economic developments and the exchange rate adjustment.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the Commission highlighted its role under Order No. 65 of 2004, as amended, and current regulations, amid the sensitive economic conditions in Iraq and the region. The circular underscores the importance of media institutions in delivering accurate information and raising awareness to assist citizens during this period.

The Commission called for accuracy in all content related to exchange rates, markets, and salaries, advising verification with relevant sources before publication. It also stressed presenting decisions with their rationales, alternatives, and impacts in a balanced manner, and clearly differentiating between facts, opinions, and projections when hosting analysts and experts.

Furthermore, the circular advised against sensational headlines and cautioned against alarmism or minimizing the situation, as such actions can damage public trust. The Commission also noted the importance of distinguishing between price changes due to exchange rate adjustments and those caused by exploitation and speculation, as misinformation can affect market dynamics and impact citizens.

The Commission affirmed that this guidance does not infringe on the right to objective criticism or the discussion of economic policies. It emphasized that responsible discourse supports both citizens and the nation, relying on media professionalism and patriotism to navigate this phase.
