Al-Abadi Backs Al-Sudani for Second Term as Prime Minister

Baghdad: The head of Al-Nasr Coalition, Haider al-Abadi, has officially announced his support for Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s pursuit of a second term. Al-Abadi emphasized that his coalition is not boycotting the upcoming elections.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Abadi clarified in a press statement that while the Al-Nasr Coalition is not putting forward candidates under its own name, some members are participating within the National State Forces Alliance. The coalition intends to support these members with its votes.

Al-Abadi assured that the legislative elections will proceed as planned and expressed alignment with Prime Minister Al-Sudani’s policies, confirming full backing for his second term. He noted Al-Sudani’s unique position as the first Iraqi prime minister to rise from within the nation, having advanced from subdistrict commissioner to governor, then minister, member of parliament, and ultimately head of the government.

Last June, Al-Nasr Coalition declared that it would not directly contest the upcoming parliamentary elections. Instead, it chose to support the National State Forces Alliance, citing challenges in the electoral process, such as the influence of ‘political money’ and insufficient enforcement of legal regulations.
