Al-Aboudi Affirms Iraqi Sovereignty Over Weapon Control and Currency Decisions

Baghdad: The government spokesperson Haider Al-Aboudi announced that managing weapon control within Iraq is strictly a sovereign matter, firmly stating that it is not influenced by external pressures.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Al-Aboudi clarified during an interview with Al-Iraqiya News Channel that the Iraqi Cabinet has not made any decision to remove zeros from the national currency. He disclosed that there are ongoing investigations into reports of a plot targeting the head of the Supreme Judicial Council.

Al-Aboudi emphasized the prime minister’s focus on enhancing the air defense capabilities, underscoring that necessary procedural and financial frameworks have been established to address these needs. Additionally, the international coalition is expediting its procedures to conclude its mission in Iraq by the end of next September.

Addressing the issue of weapon control, Al-Aboudi reiterated that the initiative to confine weapons under state authority is a sovereign decision, highlighting its importance in averting serious repercussions and affirming Iraq’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty. He pointed out that Iraq narrowly avoided international isolation because of this issue and that the government’s actions are aimed at protecting Iraqis from further consequences.

Al-Aboudi also mentioned plans to restructure and rename formations within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). He clarified that the arrest of Abbas Hussein Al-Yaqoubi was executed under a judicial warrant. Regarding currency modifications, he stressed that any decision to remove zeros from the currency remains pending as it requires legislative action by the Council of Representatives.
