Baghdad: National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji affirmed Iraq’s commitment to returning displaced Iraqis from Al-Hol camp to their original areas. In his speech on the International Day for Countering Violent Extremism leading to Terrorism, Al-Araji said: “Commemorating the International Day for Countering Violent Extremism leading to Terrorism represents an international commitment to confronting one of the most serious challenges threatening peace and societal security, and requires a comprehensive vision and collective responsibility.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Araji highlighted Iraq’s proactive role in fighting violent extremism, emphasizing that the country was at the forefront of confronting violent extremism in its most severe forms. He noted that Iraq’s efforts were not only a security battle but also a battle of values and identity, defending humanity, the state, and pluralism. Iraq’s proposal to adopt an International Day to Counter Violent Extremism demonstrated its leadership and commitment to making this issue a priority on the international agenda.
Al-Araji explained that Iraq’s experience has shown that true security is achieved not only through force but also through thought, justice, equal opportunities, and social integration. He pointed out that the National Security Advisory embraces the concept of comprehensive security, linking national security with social stability and sustainable development, and placing human beings at the center of public policies.
He further elaborated that the National Strategy to Counter Violent Extremism provides a comprehensive framework for unifying efforts and shifting from reactive measures to organized prevention and long-term solutions. The National Security Strategy focuses on early prevention, addressing root causes, and rehabilitation, which are crucial in preventing the resurgence of violent extremism.
Al-Araji also mentioned the significant role played by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in conveying the national vision to the international arena and strengthening Iraq’s position as an active partner in global efforts to combat violent extremism. He affirmed Iraq’s belief in the importance of continuing international partnerships, exchanging expertise, and defending balanced approaches that respect human rights and state sovereignty.
Al-Araji stressed the need for enhanced coordination among security, educational, religious, cultural, and media institutions, as well as civil society organizations, to address emerging challenges such as digital extremism. He emphasized that the fight against violent extremism is a long journey requiring awareness, responsibility, and joint action to create a safer, more humane world for future generations.
