Baghdad: Iraq's National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, engaged in discussions with U.S. Charg© d'Affaires in Baghdad, Ambassador Steven Fagin, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation on joint issues.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting emphasized the importance of sustained coordination between Baghdad and Washington, particularly in counterterrorism efforts and the exchange of information and expertise. During the meeting, al-Araji elaborated on the security memorandum of understanding signed between Iraq and Iran regarding border control, highlighting its role in promoting regional security and stability while addressing smuggling and infiltration issues.

Al-Araji reiterated that Iraq's diplomatic strategies are centered around its 'supreme national interests' and that the nation acts as a fully sovereign state. He emphasized the Iraqi government's commitment to a balanced approach in regional and international relations, aiming for broader diplomatic engagement with friendly and brotherly nations.

Ambassador Fagin, on his part, expressed the United States' support for Iraq's balanced policies and commended Baghdad's efforts in the return and rehabilitation of displaced persons. He also disclosed plans for an international conference in New York, which aims to encourage countries to repatriate their nationals from Syria's al-Hol camp, thereby addressing this issue comprehensively.
