Al-Aziziyah District Farmers Protest Water Scarcity

Al-aziziyah: Hundreds of residents of villages in Al-Aziziyah District, north of Wasit Governorate, demonstrated against the water scarcity and unavailability of water to irrigate their agricultural lands.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Muhammad Awda, a farmer, expressed the dire situation faced by the local farmers, stating, “We demonstrated against the lack of water to irrigate our agricultural lands, which has forced many of us to migrate to cities, in addition to the death of our livestock.” He further explained that efforts to dig wells have been ineffective, as the groundwater contains salts and sulfur compounds, leading to various diseases.

The water scarcity issue has been a growing concern for the residents, severely impacting their agricultural activities and livelihoods. The lack of adequate water supply has not only threatened their farming operations but has also led to significant socio-economic challenges, including forced migration to urban areas and loss of livestock, which are crucial for their sustenance.
