Basra: The Head of the Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee of the Sadiqin bloc, Eng. Zahra Al-Bajari, has issued a warning regarding an impending humanitarian and environmental catastrophe in Basra Governorate. This warning arises due to the worsening water scarcity crisis and escalating salinity levels, which she describes as reaching perilous levels. Al-Bajari emphasized that “the coming days will be cruel to the people of Basra if the concerned authorities continue in the policy of condolence and procrastination.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Bajari highlighted in a press statement that the water crisis in Basra has evolved from a seasonal issue into a daily struggle, threatening the health of citizens and affecting their livelihoods. She noted the declining quality of water and its adverse effects on the agricultural and animal sectors within the province.

Al-Bajari urged government agencies to take swift action to implement effective and lasting solutions, criticizing “loose promises and procrastination that are repeated every year without concrete results.” She stressed the importance of the government assuming full responsibility for this crisis, which jeopardizes Basra’s stability and intensifies the suffering of its residents.

Basra Governorate has been grappling with repeated challenges in providing drinking water for years. Local and international organizations have issued warnings about the health and social impacts, exacerbated by increasing pollution and unprecedented salinity levels.
