Al-Halbousi: International agreements must be implemented with upstream countries to secure Iraq’s water entitlement

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi, stressed today, Thursday, the necessity of implementing international agreements with upstream countries to secure Iraq’s water entitlement.

Al-Halbousi said in a gathering organized by the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee: “We in the House of Representatives are keen to pay attention to all Iraqi governorates, including agriculture, and we have included within the 2023 budget paragraphs to support agriculture, farmers’ entitlements, and to find modern methods for irrigation and mechanization.”

He pointed out the necessity of “implementing international agreements with upstream countries in Turkey and Iran to secure Iraq’s water entitlement, and providing funds to the Ministry of Agriculture by providing modern capabilities to farmers and financing their projects.”

He stressed: “We suffered from the problems of terrorism, and it is time for the executive and legislative authorities to pay attention to this people. Whenever the people are united, intruders will not be able to affect the unity of the Iraqi people.”
