Al-Maliki and Italian Ambassador Discuss Regional Developments and Bilateral Relations


Baghdad: The Head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, engaged in discussions with the newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Iraq, Nicolo Fontana, during a meeting held in his office today. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and fostering joint cooperation between Iraq and Italy.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Maliki extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Fontana, expressing his hopes for the ambassador’s successful tenure in Baghdad. He highlighted the strong ties between Iraq and Italy, emphasizing collaboration across various sectors. The discussion also covered key regional developments, including the situation in Syria and Lebanon, and the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.



Al-Maliki reiterated Iraq’s readiness to engage in the upcoming elections, aiming to establish an elected government swiftly to fulfill the aspirations of the Iraqi populace. He underscored the importance of reform through democratic processes, stating that only solutions derived from the ballot box would be acceptable to all parties involved.



Ambassador Fontana, on his part, reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to enhancing relations with Iraq. He noted Italy’s support for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to resolve regional conflicts, with a focus on ending violence and fostering peace. Fontana emphasized Italy’s intent to elevate cooperation levels and strengthen partnerships in various areas with Iraq.
