Baghdad:Al-Maliki emphasized the importance of developing relations between Iraq and the United States based on mutual respect and shared interests during a meeting with the US Charg© d’Affaires in Iraq, Stephen Fagin.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, received Fagin to discuss Iraqi-US relations, political and security developments, and ways to enhance cooperation. Al-Maliki reiterated the importance of mutual respect and shared interests, particularly within the framework of the Strategic Framework Agreement between the two nations.

Both parties highlighted the significance of the Iraqi Prime Minister’s visit to Washington in July, which contributed to strengthening bilateral relations and opening new avenues for cooperation across various sectors. Al-Maliki also addressed the importance of restricting arms to state control in accordance with the constitution, emphasizing dialogue and mutual understanding.

A timeframe and program for consolidating arms under state control would be announced on September 30, according to Al-Maliki, who stressed a balanced approach to preserve Iraq’s sovereignty. He also reiterated Iraq’s stance against using its territory for attacks on neighboring countries, advocating for official investigations before making statements.

Al-Maliki expressed optimism for a new phase of stability and reconstruction in Iraq, inviting American companies to engage in development projects. Stephen Fagin affirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening economic and investment partnerships, highlighting American companies’ interest in the Iraqi market.

The meeting concluded with both sides underscoring the importance of ongoing communication and dialogue between Baghdad and Washington to support Iraq’s security and stability and serve mutual interests.
