Baghdad: First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi has instructed the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee to swiftly establish a subcommittee to investigate the reported assault on Iraqi citizen Engineer Bashir Khaled Latif. This follows his arrest by security forces and subsequent violations during his detention.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Mandalawi emphasized that the legislative authority, embodied by the Council of Representatives, will actively address any misconduct against citizens or misuse of power by state employees. He reiterated that the Council of Representatives serves as the people’s voice and authority, committed to monitoring and holding accountable those who stray from legal and ethical standards.

Al-Mandalawi stated, “What happened to citizen Bashir Latif is a dangerous indicator of the existence of loopholes that require urgent remediation. The state is not built on the empowerment of individuals in their positions, but rather on justice, accountability, and the rule of law. The Iraqi individual is above all considerations, and everyone who assumes responsibility in state institutions is at the service of the citizen, not the other way around.”

He further explained that the subcommittee from the Security and Defense Committee will gather evidence, engage with all relevant parties, and present a comprehensive report to the Presidency of the House of Representatives within a specified timeframe. This initiative aims to implement necessary legislative and oversight measures against anyone found responsible for the violations.
