Baghdad: Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani has addressed a significant letter to UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, questioning the lack of response to the ongoing suffering in Gaza. The letter seeks to understand the reasons behind the silence on what Al-Mashhadani describes as genocide against the people of Gaza.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Mashhadani’s letter highlights the dire situation faced by the people of Gaza, who endure daily violence and deprivation. He points out that the Israeli occupation has led to the systematic killing and starvation of civilians, including children. Al-Mashhadani stresses that these actions occur without any international intervention, despite being witnessed by the global community.

Al-Mashhadani reminds Guterres of the United Nations Charter’s preamble, which emphasizes the organization’s commitment to preserving human rights and protecting people from war and injustice. He calls on the UN to take a more active role in addressing the crisis in Gaza, ensuring that it fulfills its duty to uphold human rights and prevent ethnic cleansing.

The statement further underscores the importance of the United Nations in safeguarding the remaining civilians in Gaza. While acknowledging Guterres’ humanitarian efforts and condemnation of the violence, Al-Mashhadani urges increased pressure on the international community to halt the ongoing atrocities against innocent civilians.
