Ankara: Parliament Speaker Dr. Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss bilateral relations and pressing issues, with a significant focus on water management. President Erdogan consented to Dr. Al-Mashhadani’s request to initiate the release of 420 cubic meters of water per second, starting on Wednesday.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Dr. Al-Mashhadani stressed that the relationship between Iraq and Turkey is experiencing sustainable growth, rooted in a shared historical legacy and intertwined social, geographical, and political connections. The meeting highlighted the need for Turkey to prioritize water releases from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, ensuring water accessibility for drought-stricken areas in southern Iraq.

Dr. Al-Mashhadani also addressed residency challenges faced by Iraqis in Turkey, advocating for streamlined procedures and urging against abrupt deportations that could lead to social and economic instability. He emphasized Iraq’s current state of security and stability, presenting an opportunity to enhance economic collaboration, particularly through inviting Turkish companies to engage in strategic projects within Iraq. He noted that advancing the development road would significantly contribute to regional economic and political stability, fostering trade between Asia, Europe, and the Gulf.

The Speaker of Parliament commended President Erdogan’s principled positions, especially regarding the Palestinian issue, and called for intervention to halt the violence in the occupied territories, including Gaza, and to lift the siege for humanitarian relief.

President Erdogan reciprocated by acknowledging Iraq’s steadfast positions and expressed pride in the partnership with Iraq, underscoring Turkey’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s prosperity and growth. He reiterated his pledge to increase water flow to Iraq, symbolizing Turkey’s willingness to share its resources with its neighboring country.
