Baghdad: The Head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, has called upon the Independent High Electoral Commission to disqualify Mohammed Rikan al-Halbousi from running in the upcoming parliamentary elections, citing a federal ruling.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Samarrai submitted an official complaint to the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission. He demanded the disqualification of al-Halbousi based on Federal Supreme Court Decision No. 9/Federal/2023. This decision revoked al-Halbousi’s membership in the House of Representatives for alleged violations of the Constitution and failure to meet the requirements of honesty, integrity, and good conduct.

Al-Samarrai stressed that the judicial decision is final and binding. He argued that permitting the re-nomination of an individual excluded by a valid judicial ruling constitutes a clear violation of the law and a transgression against the Constitution. Furthermore, he expressed concern that such actions could harm the prestige of Parliament and undermine citizens’ confidence in the electoral process. Al-Samarrai called for all parties to uphold judicial decisions and safeguard the democratic process.
