Baghdad: MP Mohammed Saadoun Al-Sayhoud, Secretary-General of Ajial (Generations) Gathering, has affirmed that the prime ministerial position in Iraq is designated for the Shiite component, which is the largest demographic group in the country, and will give rise to the largest parliamentary bloc as per the constitutional framework.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sayhoud clarified in a press statement that the government is inclusive of all Iraqi components, but the prime ministerial role is specifically reserved for the Shiite component due to its majority status. He emphasized that the Iraqi constitution mandates that the largest parliamentary bloc has the authority to choose the prime minister and form the government. Al-Sayhoud noted that while the prime ministership is reserved for the Shiites, the parliament presidency and the presidency of the republic are assigned to the Sunni and Kurdish components, respectively.

He further elaborated that based on the country’s census data, the Shiite community represents 65% of Iraq’s population and thus holds the majority with approximately 185 parliamentary seats. This majority forms the largest parliamentary bloc, which is essential for forming the government. Al-Sayhoud stated that the Coordination Framework will reconvene to strengthen this bloc, effectively concluding the discussion over the prime ministership.
