Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed that Iraq is rapidly moving towards a transition to clean and renewable energy. The Prime Minister’s Office announced that al-Sudani met with representatives of international companies during the International Conference on Carbon Economics, held over the past two days in Baghdad, with the Minister of Environment in attendance.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani praised the Carbon Economics Conference, the first of its kind in Iraq, for its outcomes and ideas that bolster the government’s initiatives in addressing climate challenges. He highlighted the government’s progress in economic and financial reform, creating an appealing environment for investors and international companies, with investments now totaling approximately $88 billion.

Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s commitment to clean and renewable energy, noting the establishment of the Carbon Economics Company, authorized to engage with international companies to advance this initiative. He instructed the Ministry of Environment and the Carbon Economics Company to expedite procedures for signing partnership contracts and taking concrete actions.

Company representatives expressed their enthusiasm for participating in the conference, citing Iraq’s developments over the past two years as a significant factor. They agreed to sign contracts and memoranda of understanding with the Carbon Economics Company, expressing their readiness to help build a green economy, access clean fuels, and collaborate in transferring expertise to Iraq’s specialized personnel.
