Baghdad: Head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met on Sunday with US Chargé d’Affaires in Iraq Steven Fagin to discuss bilateral relations and prospects for expanding cooperation between the two countries.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement issued by al-Sudani’s office highlighted that the meeting addressed a range of political, security, economic, commercial, cultural, and scientific issues of mutual interest. Al-Sudani emphasized the successful completion of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq following the defeat of ISIS, advocating for recognition of the sacrifices made by the Iraqi people, the role of security forces, and contributions from friendly countries and the international community.

Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s stance against using its territory for launching attacks against any party, stressing Iraq’s commitment to balanced relations based on mutual respect while safeguarding national sovereignty. He called for the translation
of memoranda of understanding signed between Iraq and the United States into enforceable agreements, with a focus on expanding cooperation in economic, commercial, cultural, and scientific fields.

Additionally, al-Sudani underscored the importance of regulating weapons in accordance with the Constitution as a national imperative for state-building and an intrinsic responsibility of the Iraqi state to secure the nation’s safety and sovereignty, not merely as a response to international or regional pressures.

US Chargé d’Affaires Steven Fagin expressed his enthusiasm for working in Iraq, especially as the country transitions into a new phase post-September 30. He highlighted the significance of bolstering economic and trade cooperation while maintaining security coordination between the two nations.

Both parties agreed to continue communication and further develop cooperation in areas that serve their common interests and contribute to Iraq’s security, stability, and development.
