Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed: “Gasoline imports will end this year,” indicating that Iraq will transition to exporting surplus petroleum products following the completion of refinery projects in Maysan, Najaf, and Diwaniyah.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani made these remarks during the inauguration of the Diwaniyah refinery expansion project, which he attended via video link. He emphasized the significant role that the Diwaniyah refinery will play in transforming about 40% of the oil produced into processing industries.

Al-Sudani highlighted Iraq’s shift from being a net importer of petroleum derivatives to meeting its domestic needs. He noted that only small quantities of petroleum products are currently imported. The completion of the Maysan, Najaf, and Diwaniyah refineries will mark a new phase where Iraq can begin exporting surplus petroleum products.

The Prime Minister further elaborated on the capabilities of the Diwaniyah refinery, stating that it will process liquefied gas with a capacity of 180 tons per day and improve gasoline production with a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day.
