Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani engaged in a significant phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on the bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States, as well as the prevailing situation in the region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during the conversation, Prime Minister al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s dedication to stabilizing the region, maintaining ceasefire agreements, and preventing further aggression. He highlighted the recent attacks on vital and oil facilities in the Kurdistan Region and the governorates of Salah al-Din and Kirkuk, noting that these actions target the Iraqi national economy. Al-Sudani reassured that the security services are actively monitoring the sources of these attacks, in cooperation with the International Coalition to Fight ISIS.

Prime Minister al-Sudani expressed concern over the timing of these attacks, as they coincide with an agreement of principles between the Ministry of Oil and American investment companies to invest in several oil fields in Kirkuk and Salah al-Din. The call further addressed the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) law, which al-Sudani stated is part of the broader security reform process approved by the House of Representatives. He clarified that the PMF operates as an official Iraqi military institution under the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Al-Sudani also mentioned the Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to transferring oil and non-oil revenues to the public treasury, following a recent Cabinet decision and Federal Court ruling. This step is seen as resolving financial and legal issues between the federal and regional governments. He reiterated the government’s constitutional commitment to its citizens, underscoring the importance of resuming oil exports through the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline and curbing smuggling and illegal practices affecting oil resources.
