Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani affirmed Iraq’s continued cooperation with all UN agencies and humanitarian and development programs operating in the country, stressing the government’s commitment to completing the remaining tasks of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and supporting the UN80 reform initiative launched by Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres. He also expressed Iraq’s readiness to contribute to implementing and advancing this vision.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani received on Sunday the UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare. During the meeting, the Prime Minister praised UNAMI’s role over the past years in supporting Iraq through major challenges.
Al-Sudani noted that the temporary transfer of ISIS terrorists to Iraqi prisons aims to safeguard Iraq’s national security and regional stability, emphasizing Iraq’s capacity to prevent terrorist activity. He called on concerned countries to repatriate their nationals affiliated with ISIS and subject them to fair trials.
For his part, Khare conveyed the UN Secretary-General’s appreciation for Iraq’s role in promoting regional stability and cooperation in transferring ISIS terrorists, particularly Iraqi nationals. He also welcomed Iraq’s recent progress across various sectors and commended the signing of a framework agreement for cooperation with the UN Resident Coordinator following the end of UNAMI’s mandate, underscoring the importance of continued partnership to support security and sustainable development.
