Baghdad: The Head of the Border Ports Authority, Omar Al-Waeli, announced an agreement with the Iranian side to open the Gilat border crossing. This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity between the two neighboring countries.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Waeli met with the Iranian Ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadegh, and the Governor of Ilam Province at the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad. The discussions centered around the shared borders of Ilam Province with neighboring Iraqi provinces, emphasizing the mutual benefits of increased border accessibility.

Following the meeting, Al-Waeli stated that the decision was made to open the Gilat border crossing as a new point of entry between Iran and Iraq. Initially, the crossing will facilitate limited passenger traffic, with plans to gradually increase this capacity. Furthermore, there is an agreement to eventually activate the crossing for commercial purposes, aiming to lay the groundwork for enhanced economic exchange
between Iran and Iraq.
