Doha: The head of the Border Ports Authority, Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, affirmed that “there will be no leniency towards any smuggling attempt or any threat to the country’s security and stability.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Authority indicated that Al-Waeli initiated field assessment procedures at the Al-Walid border crossing on Thursday evening. This followed a security operation announced by the Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs, which successfully thwarted a smuggling attempt inside an oil tanker bound for the city of Banias in Syrian territory.

The statement added that upon Al-Waeli’s arrival at the crossing, a review of all security and technical procedures was immediately conducted to determine responsibilities. This was in preparation for taking the necessary legal measures against anyone found to be negligent or involved in smuggling activities.

Al-Waeli emphasized that “border crossings represent the first line of defense for Iraq’s security.” He stressed the need to raise the level of security vigilance, enhance intelligence and technical efforts, and maintain zero tolerance for any smuggling attempts or actions that threaten the country’s security and stability. He explained that the goal of opening the crossing is to foster economic openness with neighboring countries, thereby strengthening economic relations and benefiting both nations.

He further stated that “the Border Ports Authority is proceeding with the implementation of the directives of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in coordination with the relevant security agencies, to ensure tight control over the crossings and prevent any breaches that threaten national and regional security.”

Al-Waeli also pointed out “the necessity of coordination and integration with our counterparts at the Syrian border crossings through liaison officers to cooperate in thwarting any smuggling operations that may occur by Iraqi or Syrian drivers. He emphasized the importance of handing over those responsible for such activities for investigation instead of releasing them without coordination, especially given that the crossing witnesses the passage of approximately 2,000 tankers daily.”
