Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has initiated the executive procedures for a significant housing project aimed at allocating one million residential plots in provinces where land allocation has been completed. According to National Iraqi News Agency, this decision was announced during the fourth session of the Higher Committee for Coordination between Provinces, chaired by al-Zaidi, where various service, economic, and livelihood issues were discussed.
The session, attended by several key ministers and government officials, emphasized the government's commitment to addressing economic challenges influenced by regional conditions. Al-Zaidi stressed that managing public funds efficiently and focusing on the needs of the most affected provinces were crucial to overcoming these challenges.
The meeting resulted in several resolutions, including the advancement of the million residential plots project, set to begin on September 1, 2026. Governors were tasked with finalizing land allocations, ensuring minimal conflicts, and optimizing the use of new city projects and lands nominated for residential investment.
Additionally, the session addressed the summer rice cultivation plan in Diwaniyah Governorate, approving increased water releases and regulated flow to support agricultural activities. The Ministry of Electricity was recommended to ensure adequate power supply for water pumps, while the Ministry of Water Resources was advised on managing water rationing.
Efforts to enhance the electricity sector were also discussed, including administrative changes and smart solutions implementation. A committee was formed to amend the technical model for privatizing the distribution sector, aiming to improve efficiency and service delivery.
The regulation of privately owned generators was another focus area, with directives issued to coordinate approvals and ensure proper implementation without bypassing local authorities. The meeting also covered the transition of Youth and Sports Ministry branch offices to local governance, emphasizing sports facilities' exclusive use for sports purposes.
Education management, local holidays, and the establishment of new districts in Kirkuk Governorate were additional topics addressed. A committee was formed to tackle population growth challenges, highlighting the government's proactive approach to addressing long-term issues.
Overall, the meeting underscored the government's dedication to improving provincial coordination and addressing critical issues across various sectors, with a strong focus on sustainable development and efficient resource management.
