Amendments to Iraqi Right to Information Law Reach Consensus

BAGHDAD: The Parliamentary Committee on Culture, Tourism, Antiquities, and Media has announced an agreement on significant amendments to the Right to Information Law. This development marks a pivotal step in enhancing transparency and aligning the legislation with both national and international standards. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the announcement was made following a meeting held on October 17 and 18, 2024. The meeting was part of a workshop organized by the International Rescue Committee in coordination with the Parliamentary Development Institute. The discussions focused on enriching the draft Right to Information Law by amending its provisions to ensure compliance with the Iraqi constitution, applicable laws, and global standards. The committee, along with representatives of a campaign advocating for amendments to the Right to Information Law, reached a consensus on a set of proposed changes. These amendments, initially suggested by the Parliamentary Committee, were in alignment with tho se proposed by campaign representatives. The agreed-upon joint amendments were officially documented, signaling a unified approach in revising the law. The Parliamentary Committee reiterated its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, expressing openness to further suggestions from concerned and interested parties. The aim is to proceed with the legislation in a manner that fulfills its intended purpose, aligns with constitutional mandates, and upholds international benchmarks while considering national interests.
