Baghdad: The head of the National State Forces Alliance, Ammar Al-Hakim, has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the devastating fire that broke out last night at a hypermarket in the city of Kut, the capital of Wasit province, resulting in the death of over 50 people and injuring many others.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a press statement, Al-Hakim said, 'Another heartbreaking tragedy has struck, extending a painful chain of previous disasters that could have been prevented.' He expressed his deep concern over the continued absence of adequate preventive measures and safety protocols to avert such tragic incidents.

He added that 'the recurrence of such incidents raises serious questions about the effectiveness of public safety standards,' urging the relevant authorities to 'launch a prompt and comprehensive investigation to determine the causes of the fire and to hold those responsible accountable, in order to prevent future catastrophes.'

Al-Hakim concluded his statement by expressing his 'deep solidarity with the families of the victims,' praying that 'God bestows His mercy upon the deceased, grants a speedy recovery to the injured, and gives strength and patience to their loved ones.'

The fire, which engulfed a major commercial building in Kut on Sunday night, resulted in dozens of casualties, prompting public and official calls for an investigation and a review of safety measures in public facilities.
