Antiquities Authority Explores Unified Tourist Card Proposal

Baghdad: The Antiquities Authority has engaged in discussions surrounding the proposal to introduce a unified card aimed at facilitating tourist entry to archaeological sites and museums. During an introductory meeting led by the Chairman of the Commission, Ali Obaid Shalgam, the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage explored the potential issuance of a unified card for tourists visiting Iraq. This card would permit entry through the National Office and is designed to support and encourage tourist groups.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Chairman emphasized the importance of completing legal and administrative procedures and preparing an economic feasibility study for the project. This initiative is intended to align with the Antiquities and Heritage Law, contribute to state revenue development, and bolster the tourism and archaeological sectors. Shalgam has directed the formation of a joint working team to address technical, legal, and administrative aspects, ensuring the proposal is ready for submission to competent authorities for final approvals. This effort aims to facilitate visits to archaeological sites and museums, thereby increasing tourist attraction.

The meeting further deliberated on mechanisms for implementing a unified card for tourists, aiming to organize their entry to archaeological sites and museums and ease the movement of tourist groups across governorates. The proposal includes obtaining approvals from licensed tourist guides and minimizing unofficial practices. Additionally, discussions covered the card's issuance mechanisms, duration, fees, and electronic linkage with relevant authorities, ensuring documentation of tourist movements and providing accurate statistics to support tourism planning.
