Arab League Secretary-General Advocates for Deeper Arab-Turkish Economic Ties

Istanbul: Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, emphasized the need for expanding Arab-Turkish economic cooperation beyond mere trade exchanges, aiming for comprehensive development and sustainable growth. Addressing the 15th session of the Turkish-Arab Economic Forum in Istanbul, Aboul Gheit highlighted the potential for a more effective partnership in various sectors including green energy, technology, and financial tech.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Aboul Gheit delivered his speech at the event themed “Turkey and the Arab World… A Global Corridor for Investment, Trade and Technology”. He described the forum as a crucial platform for Arab and Turkish leaders to discuss both regional and global economic challenges and to explore new opportunities in emerging sectors. The forum aims to foster dialogue among politicians, economists, businessmen, and investors from both regions.

Aboul Gheit pointed out that while the historical and cultural ties between Arab countries and Turk
ey are strong, several challenges have hindered the full potential of this relationship. He expressed optimism about overcoming these challenges through enhanced cooperation and exchange of experiences in sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions.

The Secretary-General also reported a significant increase in trade between the two regions, with Turkey’s exports to Arab countries reaching about $46 billion and imports from Arab countries about $36 billion in 2022. These figures represent a substantial portion of Turkey’s overall trade, underscoring the growing economic interdependence.

Aboul Gheit urged the need to expand the scope of cooperation to include infrastructure development, capacity building in clean and green technology, and sectors like tourism and digital technology. He also stressed the importance of concluding free trade agreements to boost trade flows and mutual investments.

He concluded with a hopeful note on the forum’s potential to establish effective m
echanisms for implementing strategic economic partnerships that benefit both sides.
