Baghdad: Bafel Talabani, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, has outlined his party’s plans for the future, emphasizing ongoing negotiations to establish a strong government in the Kurdistan Region. Speaking at the Baghdad International Dialogue Conference, Talabani highlighted the importance of forming strategic alliances and the benefits of a unified Kurdish bloc.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Talabani discussed the complexities following the announcement of the Kurdish regional parliamentary election results. He emphasized that the current dialogues aim to create a government that surpasses previous ones in effectiveness. Talabani stressed the importance of building better relations with Baghdad and working towards the interests of the Kurdish people. He acknowledged the role of the Kurdistan Democratic Party as a strong partner, despite its majority.

Talabani also addressed the ongoing demonstrations in Sulaymaniyah, stating that the protests are a legitimate expression of concern over salaries. He assured that no demonstrators would be detained or left without support. The issue of salary localization, he explained, stems from a lack of trust, and negotiations are underway to address this, alongside efforts to educate the public on financial procedures.

Economically, Talabani recognized the wealth of Kurdistan in oil and gas but emphasized the value of the educated populace. He acknowledged the challenges posed by fluctuating oil prices and the necessity to diversify income sources. Efforts are ongoing to drive reconstruction in both Kurdistan and Iraq.

Regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections, Talabani expressed a commitment to forming a strong, unified Kurdish bloc in collaboration with the Democratic Party and other Kurdish factions. This coalition aims to protect Kurdish interests in Iraq. Talabani called on the government to engage in constructive dialogue with groups outside the state framework, which he believes hinder investment opportunities.

Talabani also touched on the issue of disputed areas, advocating for the implementation of constitutional articles to address the region’s diverse components and sects. On international matters, he expressed concern over the situation in Syria and urged Western nations to ensure the rights of minorities in the drafting of the new Syrian constitution.

On the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish government, Talabani emphasized dialogue and negotiation as the path to reconciliation. He urged the international community to support these efforts, highlighting the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s role in fostering negotiation and peace.

Regarding partnerships with Christians, Talabani reiterated their importance in Iraq and advocated for greater cooperation. He expressed support for Ryan al-Kildani, despite American sanctions, acknowledging his popular support and role as a key ally.
