Basra: Director of the Basra Human Rights Office, Mahdi Al-Tamimi, engaged in discussions with the Minister of Justice, Khaled Shawani, and the acting director of the High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq, focusing on the conditions of prisons and detention centers, the high rate of torture, and strategies for treatment.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Tamimi highlighted that during the meeting, there was a significant emphasis on the office’s coordination with the Basra local government to prepare for an international conference. The conference, titled “Basra Protocol on Climate Change,” is expected to see the participation of senior UN officials and is scheduled for the first half of this year.

Al-Tamimi further mentioned that the discussions also covered crucial human rights issues. These included the resolution of cases involving detainees and those held in police stations, ensuring their rights are upheld until their cases are resolved, and the monitoring and addressing of anti-torture cases.
