Border Crossings Strategy Unveiled to Upgrade Facilities to International Standards

Basra: The head of the Border Ports Authority, Lieutenant General Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, has announced a comprehensive strategy to upgrade border crossings in Iraq to align with modern international standards. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and security of these crucial entry points.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Lieutenant General Al-Waeli participated in the inauguration of the newly reconstructed Shalamcheh border crossing, a significant land connection between Iraq and Iran. The event was attended by key figures, including the head of the Parliamentary Committee for the Arbaeen Pilgrimage, Hassan Wariwish, and several members of the Council of Representatives. The Governor of Basra, the Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, and various security leaders and directors of operating departments were also present. The redevelopment of the Shalamcheh crossing is part of a broader government initiative to enhance the readiness of land crossings ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Lieutenant General Al-Waeli highlighted that the Shalamcheh border crossing underwent a thorough rehabilitation process, focusing on its infrastructure, which was executed by the local government in Basra Governorate. The project's success was attributed to the government's active participation, which helped overcome obstacles within the designated timeframes. The development included improvements in service and administrative facilities, aiming to create a seamless work environment that boosts traveler services and trade facilitation, reduces congestion, and strengthens security at the crossing.

The head of the authority underscored that the development aligns with governmental directives and is part of the authority's strategic plan to modernize border crossings, considering them as vital gateways for Iraq to promote trade and facilitate visitor services. He commended the support from the Council of Representatives, noting that collaboration between the executive and legislative branches is essential for successful border crossing development projects and achieving national objectives in security enhancement and service provision.

Furthermore, Lieutenant General Al-Waeli emphasized the authority's completed logistical and technical preparations in coordination with supporting entities to offer superior services during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, which attracts millions of visitors annually. He affirmed the ongoing efforts to develop other border crossings in collaboration with local governments, thereby supporting travel and trade between Iraq and its neighboring countries.
