Bulgaria Holds Presidential Election Amid Black Sea Tensions

Sofia:Bulgarians are casting their votes in the presidential elections on Sunday as the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine extends to Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the elections have gained additional importance following recent drone attacks on merchant ships off the Bulgarian coast, which have likely resulted in the deaths of around two dozen international seafarers. These incidents have led to international condemnation and raised concerns over the war’s expanding scope, prompting Bulgaria to seek assistance from allies to enhance maritime security.

In the presidential race featuring 27 candidates, acting President Iliana Iotova and former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov are emerging as frontrunners. While the presidency in Bulgaria is mainly ceremonial, the election has become significant due to the current geopolitical tensions. Both leading candidates have condemned the drone strikes, albeit with differing perspectives on the broader conflict. Gyurov, backed by pro-Western parties, has expressed strong support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of Bulgaria being a reliable NATO ally. In contrast, Iotova, supported by Prime Minister Rumen Radev, advocates for a diplomatic resolution to the war.

Polls by Alpha Research indicate that Iotova holds 41% of the vote, with Gyurov at 28%. Should no candidate secure a majority, a runoff is scheduled for November 1.
