Calais: Seven people lost their lives when a migrant boat, reportedly carrying 68 people, sank in the Channel between Britain and France on August 12, 2023.

According to France24.com, the investigation centered on two Iraqi smugglers, Idrees G. and Tariq H., who were involved in orchestrating the perilous crossing.

The operation came to light when a patroller located the vessel in distress at around 5:30 am, initiating a rescue mission. Unfortunately, out of the 68 passengers, seven Afghans, all under the age of 30, drowned. Survivors provided crucial information, identifying the boat captains as two Sudanese men and the organizers as Iraqi Kurds, including the notorious smuggler nicknamed “Great Haji.”

The French agency for combating organized crime took charge of the case, with officers from various investigative units working together. Despite the challenges in gathering testimonies, some survivors identified the masterminds behind the operation. The 45-year-old Idrees G. had a history of smuggling activities, previously targeted by arrest warrants and sentenced to prison for similar offenses.

Idrees G. and his accomplice Tariq H. were apprehended near the Calais Hospital Center shortly after the boat tragedy. During the search of Idrees’s vehicle, authorities found a substantial amount of cash. Both men were uncooperative during the investigation, with Idrees challenging the police to prove his involvement. Their activities had been under surveillance by German police, who had installed a listening device in Idrees’s vehicle.

Despite previous prosecutions, Idrees G. continued his smuggling operations, contributing to the significant rise in small boat trafficking across the Channel. Authorities noted the financial appeal of such operations, with substantial earnings reported for each crossing.

In an effort to reestablish his dominance in the smuggling network, Idrees G. allegedly resorted to violent tactics against rivals. Conversations intercepted by German police revealed his strategies to sabotage competitors and instill fear. Both Idrees G. and Tariq H. were formally charged with manslaughter and aiding illegal immigration. They are set to appear before the Court of Paris, with Idrees’s lawyer denying all charges against him. The case highlights the ongoing challenges in tackling organized criminal activities related to migrant smuggling.
