Chief Justice Urges Political Unity Ahead of Upcoming Elections

Baghdad: The Chief Justice has issued a call to political forces and election candidates to engage in a comprehensive national discourse that is free from sectarian or nationalist incitement. President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zidan, emphasized the role of elections as a fundamental element of democracy, enabling the populace to express their will.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Zidan remarked that elections are the legitimate pathway for citizens to participate politically and choose their representatives in both legislative and executive capacities, thereby influencing the country’s future. He highlighted the significance of elections in legitimizing government, ensuring peaceful power transitions, and preventing authoritarian rule, as they provide a mechanism for the public to hold officials accountable and reassess confidence based on their performance and the public interest.

Zidan underscored the growing importance of active public participation as the parliamentary elections, set for November 11, 2025, draw closer. He pointed out that citizens who believe in reform and change can achieve these through peaceful and constitutional measures embodied in the electoral process.

In his statement, he urged political entities and candidates to adopt a unified national rhetoric that fosters a sense of citizenship and state loyalty, while avoiding language that could incite sectarian or ethnic division.

Zidan concluded with a reassurance that the judiciary will remain committed to its constitutional and legal responsibilities, ensuring impartial oversight and protecting the electoral process’s integrity and transparency in collaboration with the Independent High Electoral Commission.
