China Raises Alert Level to Highest as Typhoon Bavi Approaches

Muscat: The China Meteorological Center issued a red alert on Saturday for rainstorms, the highest level in its warning system, as Typhoon Bavi is expected to make landfall along China's east coast on Sunday.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the center warned in a statement of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several areas, noting that accumulated rainfall could range from 250 to 500 millimeters in parts of eastern and southern Zhejiang Province and northern Fujian Province. It added that parts of central and northern Taiwan could see rainfall accumulations of 250 to 800 millimeters.

The Chinese Meteorological Center had previously predicted increased typhoon activity in China during July, with the possibility of several making landfall or impacting coastal areas at rates exceeding previous averages.
