Erbil:Students in the fourth stage of the Department of English at Cihan University–Erbil participated in a comprehensive training session on writing graduation projects. The session, titled ‘A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Your Graduation Project,’ was conducted by Dr. Sidad Ibrahim Hassan, a postgraduate researcher from the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH), and supervised by Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen.
According to Cihan University, the training session began with Dr. Sidad Ibrahim Hassan outlining the essential stages of academic research. He stressed the importance of choosing a clear and relevant research topic, identifying a research problem, and setting suitable research objectives and questions. The session offered a detailed explanation of organizing and developing the five main chapters of a graduation project, which include the introduction, literature review, research methodology, data analysis and results, and discussion and conclusions.
Dr. Sidad also emphasized the significance of recognizing research gaps through a critical review of existing studies and explained how research projects could fill these gaps. He discussed the distinctions between qualitative and quantitative research approaches and guided students on selecting appropriate research designs, data collection instruments, and analysis methods based on their research questions and objectives. The session further covered the importance of validity and reliability in ensuring research accuracy, consistency, and credibility. Dr. Sidad highlighted the role of pilot studies in identifying potential issues and refining research instruments prior to data collection.
A practical component of the training, the Research Project Roadmap activity, was conducted to enhance students’ skills in planning and systematic thinking in academic research. Students were tasked with creating research questions for given titles, fostering critical thinking on the relationship between research topics and questions. Several students presented their research questions and received feedback and guidance from Dr. Sidad. The session encouraged active participation through a question-and-answer discussion, where students shared their research ideas and sought advice on challenges in writing their graduation projects.
Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen concluded the session by thanking Dr. Sidad Ibrahim Hassan for his informative training and for sharing his expertise with the students.
