Baghdad: The Minister of Defense, Thabet Al-Abbasi, has issued a directive prohibiting military officers and personnel from engaging in electoral rallies or distributing candidate photos, with a stern warning that violators will face strict consequences.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Defense Minister Al-Abbasi emphasized the importance of maintaining the neutrality of the military during the democratic parliamentary elections. He stated, “At a time when the country is preparing for democratic parliamentary elections, and based on the principle of keeping the security services away from any electoral activity or political exploitation, we reiterate our firm commitment to prohibiting the participation of officers and personnel in electoral or promotional conferences or gatherings.” The directive also includes a ban on placing candidate photos or electoral propaganda within military premises or nearby areas.

The minister has tasked the Military Intelligence Directorate and the Intelligence and Security Directorate with ensuring compliance with this directive. Al-Abbasi warned that any violations would lead to accountability under military regulations, with offenders being referred to a military court if necessary. He stressed that the military’s neutrality and professionalism are non-negotiable principles, underscoring that their primary duty is to serve Iraq above all else.
