Baghdad: The Arab Republic of Egypt expressed its welcome today for the decision to appoint Barham Salih as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, an official statement from Egypt highlighted the country's approval of the United Nations General Assembly resolution that confirmed Barham Ahmed Salih's appointment as the High Commissioner for a five-year term starting in January 2026. The statement emphasized the belief that Salih's extensive political experience will enhance the UNHCR's role in safeguarding the rights of refugees and displaced persons, especially amidst growing humanitarian challenges worldwide.

Egypt reiterated its full support for the UNHCR's mission and expressed readiness to collaborate with its new leadership to bolster international solidarity and support for refugees. Egypt hosts over 10 million foreigners, including migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, and is committed to providing essential services to these individuals, reflecting its leading regional role and adherence to international commitments and humanitarian responsibilities.

Additionally, Egypt conveyed appreciation and gratitude to the outgoing High Commissioner, Filippo Grandi, acknowledging his dedicated efforts and significant contributions to humanitarian causes and the global response to refugee and displaced persons' issues.
