Basra: The General Company for Southern Electricity Production engaged in discussions with French energy giant Total to explore methods to expedite the completion of the Basra Solar project. This initiative is anticipated to add a substantial 1,000 megawatts to Iraq's national grid.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Qais Ali Abdul Hadi, the director general of the General Company for Southern Electricity Production, met with Total's representatives to deliberate on the remaining phases of the Basra Sun solar power project. Situated in the Artawi area of Basra province, the project boasts a generation capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

The director general emphasized the urgency of completing the remaining stages within the specified timelines, which would enable the project to commence operations, thereby bolstering the national grid with additional generating capacity. This enhancement is expected to fortify the stability of Iraq's power system.

He further noted the significance of the project in diversifying energy sources. By expanding electricity generation from renewable energy, the endeavor aligns with the Ministry of Electricity's broader plans to boost generation capacity, address the rising demand for power, and reduce dependence on conventional fuel sources.
