Environmental File Is a Sovereign Issue Requiring Institutional Partnership

Baghdad: President Nizar Amedi affirmed on Sunday that environmental issues have become a matter of national sovereignty requiring coordinated action among all state institutions to strengthen the country's response to environmental and climate challenges.

According to Iraqi News Agency, a statement issued by the Presidency's Media Office confirmed that President Amedi met with Minister of Environment Sarwa Abdul Wahid at Baghdad Palace on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The meeting focused on reviewing the current environmental situation in Iraq and addressing the key challenges facing the sector.

The statement emphasized that environmental issues have transcended their status as mere public service concerns, evolving into a sovereign national priority. President Amedi highlighted the need for partnership among all state institutions, alongside integrated national policies and programs, to enhance the effectiveness of addressing environmental and climate-related challenges.

Minister of Environment Sarwa Abdul Wahid provided an overview of the ministry's key programs and ongoing projects. She also detailed the measures being implemented to reduce pollution, improve environmental oversight, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
