Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized Israel’s approach to humanitarian aid, stating that it is a “matter of conscience that transcends politics.” Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s significant contributions to global aid efforts relative to its gross domestic product.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Erdogan expressed his views in an article for the Spanish newspaper El Pais, published on World Humanitarian Day. He emphasized the importance of cooperation based on mutual respect and justice in achieving peace and prosperity.

Erdogan specifically addressed the situation in Gaza, condemning Israel’s blockade and punitive measures. He argued that such actions not only violate international law but also undermine global conscience. Since October 7, 2023, he noted, over 61,000 individuals have lost their lives, and more than two million have been displaced in the region.

Turkey, Erdogan stated, has provided more than 100,000 tons of humanitarian aid and contributed over $40 million to UNRWA for Gaza. He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and ensuring a dignified future for them.

The president acknowledged the challenging global landscape marked by crises and geopolitical tensions but insisted that Turkey will not waver in its humanitarian efforts. He stressed that aid is driven by compassion and awareness, not politics.

Highlighting a global crisis, Erdogan pointed out that over 300 million people lack basic human needs. This situation, he said, demands worldwide responsibility and action.

Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s long-standing tradition of humanitarian work, which extends beyond regional confines to various parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans, and Latin America. Turkey coordinates these efforts with international institutions to uphold human dignity.
