Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that Turkey is actively fulfilling its responsibilities in addressing conflicts, crises, and injustices, with a focus on achieving global peace and justice. This statement was made during a speech on Thursday after a joint meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the delegation level in Ankara.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Erdogan expressed his belief that the messages delivered in conjunction with Pope Leo XIV will resonate with both the Islamic and Christian communities, thereby enhancing hopes for global peace. He emphasized that the Pope's visit to Turkey occurred at a crucial juncture amid regional and international developments.

Erdogan highlighted Turkey's close monitoring of efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing Turkey's willingness to support these diplomatic initiatives. He valued Pope Leo XIV's calls for peace and dialogue as essential to the success of diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Addressing the Palestinian issue, Erdogan criticized the Israeli government's actions in Gaza, noting the bombing of civilian areas, including religious sites such as the Church of the Holy Family. He underlined the importance of maintaining the historical status quo in Al-Quds and advocated for justice for the Palestinian people through the implementation of a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.

Erdogan stressed the significance of a lasting peace in the region, pointing out the toll of prolonged conflicts on Gaza, with over 70,000 casualties, predominantly women and children. He acknowledged the targeting of the Church of the Holy Family and commended the consistent support of Pope Leo XIV and his predecessor, Pope Francis, for the Palestinian cause.

He also remarked on how intolerance leads to conflict, division, and rising xenophobia, particularly Islamophobia, in Western societies. Erdogan highlighted Turkey's significant humanitarian contributions, hosting millions of refugees, including those fleeing the Syrian conflict and the war in Ukraine, and promoting respect for all religions within its predominantly Muslim population.
